Can I offer you a [blog post] in these trying times?

Today feels like a normal day, in that it is no way normal. We are living in, unfortunately, precedented times, and it’s like reliving my teenage years… the years I would least like to relive (if I’m being honest).

So why write a blog post? Well, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to be the type of person that I am with an online presence. I want to stress that I am in NO way an influencer, or someone with a big digital footprint. I did a TedX talk ONCE, and every now and then my comments on other popular Instagram accounts get a nice number of “likes” and comments. I am not one of the quintessential GENX social media darlings — but I do have social media accounts and now and again I will post about the difficulties of living through the last ten years or so.

And this is a problem.

It’s a problem because the state I live in (physically, not meta-physically) has begun to “crack down” on individuals who violate the government’s idea of “serious professional and personal misconduct” that is “directly contrary to the values” of… the state and nation, presumably. This has extended directly into areas once thought safe — higher education. And that’s where I work, not as a professor but as a member of staff.

Self-censure is not one of my favorite things, if we’re being honest. But this is where we are now. Public posts on any social media are subject to review and I will not be participating in this game. So this is it for now. Perhaps things will change in the future. I don’t know. We’ll just have to wait and see.
